making a call

Hi, new developer here. I've been looking at the sample apps and I am confused about making a call. The sample app requires a source number and a destination number. What is the source number? If I write an app to make calls from a web interface to a phone, how does this work? How are the user's microphone and speakers associated with something that ribbit controls? Thanks Chris
